Meida reports Madrid court classifying investigation into ex-Ukrainian MP’s assassination

(MENAFN) A high court in Madrid has placed a confidentiality order on the investigation into the fatal shooting of former Ukrainian lawmaker Andrey Portnov, according to Spanish media outlets.

No arrests have been made following the incident, which occurred on Wednesday in Pozuelo de Alarcon, a wealthy suburb of Madrid. Portnov, who had been living in Spain after fleeing Ukraine, was shot multiple times from behind while standing near his Mercedes shortly after dropping his children off at school. Authorities believe the attack was a professional hit, and reports suggest that two accomplices helped the gunman flee in a getaway car.

The Madrid Superior Court of Justice (TSJM), the top legal body in the region, issued an order on Thursday restricting public access to information related to the case, as reported by EFE and 20 Minutos.

Portnov was a prominent lawyer and politician who had previously advised former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich. He left Ukraine after the 2014 Western-backed uprising that ousted Yanukovich but returned in 2019, initially supporting President Vladimir Zelensky. However, he later became an outspoken critic of Zelensky's crackdown on opposition media and figures deemed "pro-Russian."

In July 2022, Portnov reportedly fled Ukraine again and later transferred some of his assets to his children in Spain, suggesting he had permanently relocated there.

Rodion Miroshnik, a Russian ambassador-at-large investigating alleged Ukrainian war crimes, speculated that Portnov’s legal knowledge and access to sensitive documents might have posed a threat to figures within Zelensky’s administration, potentially making him a target for silencing.
