Jurgen Klopp describes FIFA’s Club World Cup as “pointless”
In an interview with a German publication, Klopp took aim at the 32-team tournament, which takes place every four years, arguing that it places excessive demands on players already burdened by a crowded schedule.
The current 2025 edition of the Club World Cup, being held in the United States, started on June 14—just two weeks after the Champions League final—and will continue until July 13. Unlike earlier versions that featured only a few teams, this revamped competition adopts a format similar to the FIFA World Cup, with eight groups of four teams each.
Klopp described the tournament as “pointless” and warned that “whoever wins it will be the worst winner of all time because they’ll have played all summer and then gone straight back into the league.”
He also criticized those behind the decision to expand the tournament, stating that the ideas came from “people who have never been involved in the day-to-day business of football.”
The German coach, known for leading Liverpool to their first Premier League title in the 2019–2020 season, expressed concern about the minimal recovery time for players, which he believes will lead to a spike in injuries and mental fatigue.
“It’s too many games. I fear that next season we will see injuries like never before. If not then, they’ll come during or after the Club World Cup,” Klopp warned.
