Trump envoy states Iran truce possibly to help with Ukraine peace
(MENAFN) The recent truce between Iran and Israel might serve as a blueprint for resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, according to Steve Witkoff, the US Special Envoy to the Middle East. In an interview with CNBC on Wednesday, Witkoff expressed optimism that the ceasefire, brokered by Washington, could encourage progress in Ukraine peace efforts.
Hostilities between Iran and Israel flared up on June 13 after Israel launched airstrikes, alleging Tehran was nearing nuclear weapons capability—claims denied by both the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and US intelligence. The United States later joined the military campaign by bombing Iranian nuclear sites. A ceasefire was reached earlier this week, ending the brief but deadly escalation.
Witkoff, a key figure in facilitating the Iran-Israel ceasefire, said it could “lead to some very, very, very good things” for a possible resolution in Ukraine. He has also played a significant role in reviving peace efforts between Russia and Ukraine, which resumed direct negotiations in Türkiye last month after a long pause.
During their June 2 meeting, Russian and Ukrainian representatives agreed on a prisoner exchange and shared draft proposals for a peace deal. However, both sides still reject each other’s terms. Russia insists that any future agreement must acknowledge the current battlefield situation and ensure Ukrainian neutrality.
The US-led airstrikes in Iran have drawn strong condemnation from Moscow, which labeled them a violation of international law and a threat to regional stability.
US President Donald Trump, who previously promised to end the Ukraine conflict within 24 hours, later admitted the statement was sarcastic. He has voiced impatience with both Kyiv and Moscow and warned that the US may impose sanctions on both if they fail to pursue a resolution soon.
