Trump contemplates investment in Iran’s nuclear program
Washington remains firm on its key condition that Iran must cease uranium enrichment entirely—a demand Tehran strongly opposes. To make the proposal more attractive, the US and its allies have suggested various incentives, including a $20-30 billion investment in Iran’s nuclear energy sector. This funding would come from Gulf Arab partners rather than directly from the US.
Other potential incentives include partial sanctions relief and allowing Iran access to roughly $6 billion in frozen assets held abroad. There is also a proposal to replace Iran’s Fordow nuclear site—recently targeted by US strikes—with a new civilian-only facility funded by Gulf-backed investments.
It remains unclear how Iran has reacted to these proposals. Sources described the situation as uncertain, with negotiators seeking creative solutions. Some US officials believe recent US-Israel military actions might pressure Iran into accepting the terms, while others fear the escalation could push Tehran closer to developing nuclear weapons. Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful and denies any intent to develop nuclear arms.
Earlier this month, Israel launched coordinated strikes on Iran’s nuclear and military sites to halt Tehran’s nuclear progress, with the US joining in airstrikes targeting facilities including the fortified Fordow plant. While Trump claimed the nuclear sites were “completely obliterated,” US media reports suggested the damage was relatively limited.
