UN Commends Hamas for Willingness to Engage in Ceasefire Talks

(MENAFN) The head of the United Nations expressed approval of Hamas’ announcement showing openness to releasing hostages and participating in discussions grounded in US President Donald Trump’s ceasefire initiative for Gaza, according to a statement made Friday by his spokesperson.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres "urges all parties to seize the opportunity to bring the tragic conflict in Gaza to an end," declared Stephane Dujarric in an official comment.

The remark followed statements by senior Hamas representative Mousa Abu Marzouk, who said on Friday that the Palestinian resistance movement had agreed to Trump’s ceasefire plan "in principle," backing its general framework while noting that its execution would still depend on negotiations.

Guterres expressed appreciation to Qatar and Egypt for their "invaluable" efforts in mediating, according to Dujarric.

"The Secretary-General reiterates his consistent call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, and unfettered humanitarian access," Dujarric emphasized.

He further underscored that the United Nations remains committed to aiding all efforts aligned with these goals in order to prevent additional human suffering.
