Syria Launches First Post-Assad Parliamentary Elections

(MENAFN) Syria officially kicked off its parliamentary elections on Sunday, marking a significant step in the country's political transition following the collapse of the Assad regime.

According to a local news agency, accredited electoral centers across the country opened their doors to begin the voting process, welcoming members of the electoral bodies to cast their ballots. This marks the commencement of Syria's first parliamentary elections in the post-Assad era.

In late July, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa received the final draft of the temporary electoral law for the parliament and signed it into law with a decree on August 27. The decree outlined the framework for the election process, detailing membership eligibility for the People's Assembly, the formation of relevant committees, and the rules governing voting procedures.

The People's Assembly consists of 210 seats. Under the current setup, one-third of the members are appointed directly by the president, while the remaining two-thirds are elected through the new process, which officials have described as provisional and tailored to Syria's current circumstances.

Since the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in late 2024, Syria's newly-formed government has embarked on a series of political and economic reforms, aiming to foster national unity and strengthen cooperation with both regional and global partners.

Assad, who had ruled Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia last December, bringing an end to the Baath Party's rule, which had held power since 1963. Sharaa's transitional government was established in January, signaling a new era for Syria.
