Saudi Arabia voices hope for UAE troops pulling out from Yemen

(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia said on Tuesday that it hopes the United Arab Emirates will pull its troops out of Yemen within 24 hours, following a deadline issued by Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council.

During a cabinet session led by King Salman, Saudi officials stated that a UAE withdrawal would contribute to reducing tensions and help avert further deterioration of the situation in Yemen.

The cabinet voiced regret that Saudi-led efforts aimed at calming the situation had been met with “unjustified escalation that contradicts the principles on which the coalition was founded and undermines its mission to achieve security and stability in Yemen and runs counter to the assurances received from the UAE.”

Saudi authorities expressed optimism that "wisdom will prevail, and the principles of brotherhood and good neighborliness will be upheld, along with the close relations that unite the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and the interests of Yemen."

They also emphasized that the kingdom would not hesitate to take all necessary actions “to confront any threat to its national security,” while reaffirming its commitment to Yemen’s security, stability, and sovereignty.

Earlier on Tuesday, Yemen’s presidential council head, Rashad al-Alimi, annulled a joint defense agreement with the UAE and imposed a 24-hour deadline for Emirati forces to leave the country. He also announced a 90-day state of emergency, along with a 72-hour suspension of air and land traffic at all ports and border crossings.

These developments followed a “limited” airstrike carried out by the Saudi-led coalition on two vessels linked to the UAE at the port of Mukalla, according to reports.

The escalation comes amid heightened tensions after the Southern Transitional Council seized control of the eastern provinces of Hadramaut and Al-Mahra earlier this month, following clashes with forces aligned with the Yemeni government.
