Peter Mandelson Slams Europe’s Weakness
In an opinion piece for The Spectator on Thursday, Lord Mandelson contrasted US President Donald Trump’s decisive measures against Venezuela and his threats concerning Greenland with the more cautious diplomatic efforts pursued by European capitals.
Mandelson cautioned that “Europe’s growing geopolitical impotence in the world is becoming the issue now, and histrionics about Greenland is confirming this brutal reality.”
This marks the diplomat’s first significant public statement since his dismissal last year due to his close association with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
According to Mandelson, Trump “has the means and the will,” whereas Europe’s political figures lack both. He added, ”In Caracas last weekend… Trump did more in a day than orthodox diplomacy was able to achieve in the past decade.”
The US strike in Venezuela on January 3 led to the capture of President Nicolas Maduro, who was subsequently transferred to the United States to face charges of drug trafficking.
Meanwhile, the official EU declaration on Venezuela urged “calm and restraint” and called for a “peaceful solution to the crisis.” Separately, a statement issued by seven European leaders regarding Greenland defended the territory’s autonomy within the Kingdom of Denmark.
However, the document stopped short of denouncing Trump’s ambitions, instead describing Washington as an “essential partner.”
