SEATTLE, WA, UNITED STATES, October 22, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- In a historic gathering that fused the raw energy of hip-hop culture with an urgent call for public health reform, nearly 4,000 youth completely filled the iconic Antsahamanitra amphitheater. The massive turnout marked the official launch of 16 MESURES, a groundbreaking national public awareness campaign timed perfectly with World Mental Health Day to shatter long-standing social stigmas and directly address the country’s silent struggle with emotional well-being and suicide prevention.

The atmosphere inside the open-air venue was electric as the clock struck the symbolic time of 13H13, kicking off an unprecedented collaborative effort. Developed through a broad global coalition, including Hip Hop Works Madagascar, Good Loud Media, YAS Madagascar, the Ministry of Public Health of Madagascar, and the Hip Hop Institute 4 Peace, the event proved that music can serve as a powerful tool for social change. A dynamic, high-energy lineup of local and international artists took the stage to support the cause, featuring powerful performances by Geoscar, Bogota, Voaygang, Double G, Ko Dobla, ALP, Mason'aloka, Illicit Soul, Tommy Montana, XCrew, Yrist, YVSLF, Scka, Vercors, Buddha El Taga, Mista & Boska, and Kintaniavo.

Operating in a landscape that has historically lacked a dedicated national suicide prevention strategy, the movement’s name draws creative inspiration from the classic 16-bar verse that serves as the foundation of rap music. “Sixteen bars are the DNA of hip-hop music, and 16 MESURES is leveraging that foundation to confront Madagascar's mental health and suicide crisis by promoting the country's new 24/7 lifeline,” explained Luis Herald Rasolondrainy, the creator of 16 MESURES and Director of Hip Hop Works Madagascar. He noted that the ultimate goal of using hip-hop is to break the heavy social stigmas keeping youth isolated, seamlessly connecting them to immediate, life-saving institutional support.

To amplify the campaign's message globally, hip-hop pioneer Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, co-founder of RUN DMC, peace advocate Tina Marie Tyler, and TV host Chef Andre Rush have been named Official Ambassadors of 16 MESURES. "Hip-hop has always been more than music. It is a voice for people who feel unheard, a source of strength for those facing adversity, and a community built on resilience," said DMC. "Mental health challenges affect every culture, every generation, and every neighborhood. I am honored to serve as an ambassador for 16 MESURES and support the effort to ensure that anyone struggling knows they are not alone. Asking for help is not weakness. It is one of the strongest moves a person can make."

“For far too long, mental health struggles in Black communities have been hidden behind silence, stigma, and the expectation that we simply ‘stay strong.’ But strength is not suffering alone,” Tyler stated.

“As a chef, I know that true nourishment goes way beyond the plate—it’s about feeding the mind, soul, and community," stated Chef Andre Rush. "Hip-hop has always been the voice of the unheard, a raw and honest outlet for our deepest struggles, and that is exactly why the 16 MESURES campaign is so vital. In the kitchen and in life, I’ve always stood on the front lines advocating for mental health awareness, especially for those fighting silent battles against depression and PTSD. We need to shatter the stigma that says asking for help is a weakness. It takes immense strength to step forward. By wrapping life-saving mental health support in the universal language of hip-hop and establishing the 016 lifeline, we are giving the youth of Madagascar a powerful rhythm for healing, survival, and hope.”

"Music provides a safe place to consider new ideas and new possibilities,” stated Jed Brewer, Founder, Good Lound Media, which helped fund the launch. “The creation of a dedicated mental health and suicide prevention hotline means that a listener can then move seamlessly from the reality of the song to their actual lived experience."

The operational backbone of this lifeline is being powered by the campaign’s official telecommunications partner, YAS.

Additional participants include Made For A Woman, Federation of Hip Hop & Urban Culture in Madagascar, Sante Mentale Madagascar, True Culture University, the Gandhi Mandela Foundation, and the Feoko Association. While the historic event at Antsahamanitra has concluded, the campaign notes that the true work has just begun.
